Regrets

Rattling to April’s winding horns
          Intense, moribund
there is no release
          no letting go
for these few brittle leaves
no sudden tumble to oblivion
Grief and love have fallen
          petal by petal
while these grotesques hang shaken
          by another season’s turning
implausible among the small new greening
the groping tendril, the thickening vine.
